Don’t Miss These Labor Day Events and Activities in San Diego

Labor Day is a great chance to squeeze in some last-minute summer fun. Luckily for visitors to our sun-soaked town, September is still as warm and sunny as ever. It’s a fantastic place to spend the long holiday weekend, whether you’re keen to attend an event or prefer to check out some of the city’s renowned beaches and attractions. Read on for a few tips for having a blast during Labor Day in San Diego.
Catch the Tail End of Nighttime Zoo
One of the most anticipated San Diego events, Nighttime Zoo takes place at the San Diego Zoo through the end of Labor Day weekend. It’s your chance to enjoy one of the city’s top attractions without the crowds (and the blazing sun!). Enjoy the exhibits under the night’s sky and savor the jungle-like grounds until 9 p.m. Make sure to ride the Skyfari Aerial Tram, which whisks you over the treetops and exhibits below while affording splendid views of Balboa Park and the San Diego skyline beyond.
Celebrate California Wine Month
Raise a glass to California’s world-renowned wines during this month-long celebration. There are plenty of ways to take part, from buying a locally produced wine to visiting a local winery or tasting room.
For example, Gianni Buonomo Vintners, located not far from Sunrise Inn San Diego, offers a welcoming tasting room. Order a glass of wine or go with the flight, which comes with a sampling of six different wines. Willing travel a little farther afield? There are dozens of San Diego wineries within a short drive, especially in Temecula, where nearly 50 wineries are operating in gorgeous surroundings.
Check out the Outdoor Summer Music Series at Liberty Station
Liberty Station will no doubt be a hotspot over Labor Day in San Diego. It’s where First Friday Arts District takes place, where you can meet artists and view a collection of outdoor public art installations. It’s also the site of the Outdoor Summer Music Series, featuring performances by talented local artists. Come join in the fun and camaraderie the Friday before Labor Day from 5 to 8 pm in the Carruth Cellars patio located between Barracks 17 and Barracks 19. Musical group Nathan & Jessie will be sharing their unique blend of jazz, folk, and blues.
Catch a Padres Game
If you’ve never been to a Padres game in San Diego, you’re in for a treat. The Padres play the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park on Labor Day, giving you the chance to absorb the energy and fun of one of the nation’s favorite pastimes. Buy tickets well in advance to secure the best seats for the 3:40 pm game. If tickets sell out, you can still participate in the fun by getting a seat at a local sports bar and watching from the sidelines. The Gaslamp Quarter will be especially lively, with most screens in most bars displaying the game.
Attend the Hawaiian Plumeria Festival
Balboa Park is the setting for this annual Hawaiian plumeria extravaganza, which celebrates the delicate beauty of these fragrant plants. See hundreds of blooms on display and shop for popular varieties supplied by various vendors. The event takes place September 3 and 4 at Casa del Prado. A tip about Balboa Park on the weekends: Parking can be tough, so plan plenty of time to arrive well in advance.
Enjoy Lively Beaches
Labor Day may mark the end of summer, but you wouldn’t know it from San Diego’s fabulous weather and endlessly popular beaches. At any coastal spot in town, the sand is dotted with merrymakers enjoying the extended warm weather. Mission Beach is popular from sun up to sun down, thanks to a long boardwalk and a fun amusement park.
Ocean Beach’s famous pier and offbeat commercial district make it a great place to while away the day. And Coronado’s renowned gold-flecked beaches and stunning views make it a winner no matter when you go. Prepared to venture even further? A collection of beach towns hugging the coastlines north of town are definitely worth the trip.
